Learn to string a beautiful bracelet or necklace in this two-hour jewelry-making workshop, suitable for beginners. You don’t need to be creative or skilled to go home with your own unique, finished piece which you will complete during the session. In this series of five classes, you’ll learn essential skills for creating a myriad of beaded jewelry pieces. Stringing beads on silk, making dangles and earrings, linking together chain maille and bead weaving are techniques you’ll enjoy. Handouts will be provided at each class to reinforce and enhance your new knowledge. These skills may unleash your creativity, inspiring you to design pieces to match everything in your wardrobe. Beware – friends and family will want your creations! In this workshop students will learn the basics of creating a portrait sculpture in clay. Anatomy and proportions will be introduced. Technical aspects of hand-building, working with clay tools and working on an armature will be demonstrated. Students will complete a bisque fired terracotta portrait. Workshop fee covers the cost of clay, kiln firing, and sculpture studio use.

This class incorporates both perceptual and conceptual approaches to life drawing by employing a series of exercises that alternate subjective with objective studies. We refer to master drawings only after experimenting with a more direct mode of perceiving the image of the nude model. Group critiques and exploration using various applications of unfamiliar media are essential learning techniques.                              

While beginners and advanced students of drawing learn together and profit from such an environment, individual attention is extended to every student, creating a custom approach to a studio of experimentation and unique creative learning process. Enrollment is limited to ten students.

This course will cover the fabrication of slip cases and boxes (including clam shell boxes) to protect books. It will also deal with subjects such as repair or restoration of damaged books. Students are encouraged to bring their own books in need of care. Some tools and supplies will be necessary, such as safety cutters, rulers, glue, cutting mat (cost: $20 or so). Any required materials, such as cardboard, fabric, marbled paper, and leather will be provided at an additional cost.

This course will introduce Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement) through lecture and hands-on workshops. Students will learn Japanese Ikebana, in addition to Japanese history, culture, arts, and parts of its language from the point of view of aesthetics. During the course you will build a solid foundation in ikebana, during each session you will complete one flower arrangement.

The style of Ikebana to be taught is based on that of the the Ikenobo School, the oldest Ikebana school in Japan. In the first six sessions, students will different designs of Moribana Style. After completion of part 1 & 2 (12 sessions of training), you may apply to the headquarters in Japan for the first level of certification from the Ikenobo School. Prior to the start of class, students require containers, flower scissors and pinholders. Please contact Continuing Education for the supply list

This course is for students who have already taken Basic Photography of have reasonable photography experience. Whether you use a film camera or a digital camera, the course will introduce you to an in-depth approach to the art of photography and the world of digital photography and computers. You will develop a deeper understanding of composing artistic photos, films, lighting, special effects, cameras and equipment as you gain a new level of satisfaction by attaining a greater command of craft and artistry. A highlight of the course is a specialty session devoted to shooting portraits in a studio setting. Assignments and projects will be given and critiqued each session.

NOTE: This course does NOT teach how to use a digital camera!
