Child and Family Welfare: Current Trends and Controversial Issues
Presenter: Elissa D. Giffords, A.A., B.A., M.S.W., D.S.W. and Ilene Nathanson, D.S.W, L.C.S.W, B.C.D
Description: Students will explore current trends, as well as controversial and topical issues in child welfare and family services. The role of the social worker in an interdisciplinary model of practice as caseworker, advocate, policy maker, service provider, researcher and practitioner will all be explored.

Domestic Violence: Populations At Risk
Presenter: Mindy Perlmutter, LCSW-R
Description: The student will examine the cyclical nature of domestic violence and its association with alcohol and substance abuse. Students will also explore the rights to safety and safety planning for populations at-risk within the context of social justice, with emphasis on how an interdisciplinary approach can assist in the empowerment of survivors of abuse.

Substance Abuse: New Research on Issues and Intervention Strategies
Presenter: Loretta Hartley-Bangs L.C.S.W
Description: Students will be provided with a foundation in basic and advanced techniques of counseling the substance-using population. Students will also receive a comprehensive overview of the latest issues and findings in chemical dependency treatment. They will additionally explore various state-of-the-art counselor intervention strategies, and be made thoroughly aware of the qualities and professional skills necessary for competent and effective practice.

Forensic Social Work: Current Issues
Description: Students will focus on separating the various components associated with the forensic social work role, e.g., tasks and potential ethical conflicts, by examining current forensic social work issues and/or circumstances in the media. Students will also be made aware of the principles of generalist and clinical practice as applied to the assessment and treatment of individuals charged with a range of criminal and juvenile offenses, with special attention to the specific issues associated with sentencing, diagnosis, incarceration, and release.

Substance Abuse and Ageing

Description: Because the subject of substance abuse and the elderly is widely misunderstood and under-estimated, it is the goal of this course to raise awareness of the issue, help students learn to assess the problem, discuss the issues involved in misunderstanding of the problem, and develop strategies for intervention.
